HALP! computer fun!

Postby manx on Sun Jun 03, 2007 12:20 am

So my comp is kinda messed at the moment, and it's all thanks to some lovely Nv4_disp loop error. I've read a few articles written about the problem, but in all of them it's a pretty complex series of testing things out in an attempt to isolate exactly what is wrong... so after harassing Yume with questions about the problem, I figured I'd post here looking for suggestions, cause as wonderfully good as I am getting at this stuff, I still don't think I'm on level to fix this one myself! I am considering changing my OS or buying a new video card, but both of these options seem a bit extreme seeing as i'm using xp now and a geforce 7900gt... which are both safely in the "not out of date" spectrum, I think.

1) Download
2) uninstall drivers using device manager
3) restart in Safemode run XDC cleaning with NVIDIA
4) restart back into windows then download and install XG-160.02

When does the error occur? After playing a game for a while? When you first start the game? Are you even playing a game?

Immediately when I start a game I experience screen tearing and stuff, and it is only games like WoW or Oblivion that it happens with. If I keep the game up and on the screen, the tearing gets progressively worse and the computer will lock up, go to a blue screen, or sometimes I can close it with cntrl alt dlt. I'll PM you a very pretty screen capture I got which I can't post here cause it has my account name and i'm too lazy to photoshop it off.

someone suggested the tearing is a sign of the card overheating, but ive checked the temps and they are waaaaay low, and the fan is free of dust.

a friend of mine directed me to http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?Pa ... leID=9&P=1 , but as I stated before I was just praying for something simpler... but I really should just start going through the steps to sort it out.

oh, aside from tearing, when I could run the games I would get nifty polygons shooting across the screen in random places, and fun holes in the world and such. I should also note that I can still run games like Diablo 2 9/10 times without it locking up the computer (I experience no tearing with it, the computer just locks up).

btw, thanks for your interest Denial
